Here they are: the most popular 'Music Pirate' downloading software for torrent file sharing.

  1. uTorrent
(Known as both "u-torrent" and "micro torrent", this is the most popular torrent tool today. uTorrent has all the functions a torrent downloader will ever need, and it only requires 1 MB of hard drive space and memory. uTorrent has all the downloading and seeding performance of its competitors, but with minimal impact to the rest of your computer's speed.)

  2. BitComet
(Good, but losing popularity to uTorrent)

  3. ABC
    (Another very popular Torrent client)

  4. BitLord
(A popular tool that has a built-in torrent search engine...you may never need to use a torrent search web site ever again with this product)

  5. TurboBT
(Nice-looking GUI appearance with this package)

  6. Azureus
(A Java language client; was considered "king" of the torrent programs until uTorrent software came along and took that crown away.

The Five Best Torrent Search Engines

  • **Special Mention: Torrent-finder.com (Several readers from the central USA submitted this site recently. This site is gaining a bigger readership every day.)

  • **Special Mention: ShareTV.org (ShareTV is dedicated to sharing television episodes and entire TV series. Find "24", "Heroes", and "Lost" episodes here. Special thanks to Chris R. for telling us about his web site.)

  • **Special mention: Mininova.org has 250,000 torrents indexed as of Jan, 2008. Mininova is the successor to Suprnova, one of the original big torrent databases of the Web.
  • Isohunt.com

  • If you want to use this tremendous Canadian site, you better use it while you can. Note: any torrent listed as "ISOhunt release" means that it is a file verified by the administrators...a nice feature to help you get authentic torrents, not fake files.)

  • The Pirate Bay, by readership size, is the most popular torrent search site today. Pirate Bay also has an immense database of 600,000+ torrents, the single largest database available on the web.

  • Torrentspy.com March 24, 2008: Torrentspy has voluntarily closed its doors. Instead of conforming to the American court mandates to change their privacy policies, the Torrentspy team has opted instead to cease operations. A sad day for downloaders everywhere.

  • Torrentscan.com (a meta-search engine: Torrenscan is a search engine that searches other torrent search engines)

  • Bitsoup Bitsoup is a growing favorite amongst P2P downloaders. As the trend towards private torrent sharing continues, you will need to signup and join as a member to participate in the Bitsoup swarm.

The Top 35 Torrent Sites of 2008

  1. Torrentscan.com (a "meta-search" engine, which is a search engine that searches other search engines)

  2. Bitsoup Bitsoup is a growing favorite amongst P2P downloaders. As the trend towards private torrent sharing continues, you will need to signup and join as a member to participate in the Bitsoup swarm.

  3. BiteNova (formerly known as “Bi-Torrents”, BiteNova is a free Torrent site with a spartan look and fast searching format.)

  4. Torrentspy.com March 24, 2008: Torrentspy has voluntarily closed its doors. Instead of conforming to the American court mandates to change their privacy policies, the Torrentspy team has opted instead to cease operations. A sad day for downloaders everywhere.

  5. Torrentportal.com

  6. Isohunt.com
September, 2007: Isohunt is barring American users from connecting to American torrent trackers. American users, however, can still use Isohunt to find torrents, and connect to third party trackers.

  7. LegalTorrents.com (As the name implies, this is a database of public-domain content. Thanks to Anand S. for this URL.)

  8. Snarf It! (born from previous Suprnova influences)

  9. Torrentz.com (special thanks to reader, Jonathan R., for this link)

  10. Torrents.to

  11. Torrentmatrix.com

  12. Mininova.org has 190,000 torrents indexed as of April, 2007. Mininova is the successor to Suprnova, one of the original big torrent databases of the Web.

  13. FileMP3.org

  14. TorrentBytes.net

  15. Torrentreactor.to (Torrentreactor has made a comeback from a hijacking and an uncooperative hosting service. They have moved to a different server setup and a Tonga country domain outside the USA. Read the details on their home page.)

  16. Torrentbox.com FYI: like Isohunt, Torrentbox is being sued by the MPAA as of February 28, 2006. The days for this fine search engine may be numbered.

  17. BTjunkie

  18. TorrentTyphoon.com (a unique bittorrent meta-search engine that searches several of the most popular sites. Unfortunately, it does not do a good job categorizing the torrent files themselves)

  19. Yotoshi.com

  20. The Pirate Bay (Pirate Bay, by readership size, is the most popular torrent search site today. Pirate Bay has an immense database of 600,000+ torrents, the largest database at this time.)
(May 31, 2006: The Pirate Bay has been shut down by Swedish authorities. Details are available on the Pirate Bay home page.)
(June 2006: The Pirate Bay has restarted operations, now that the police have duplicated the PB hard drives for forensic purposes. Enjoy this database while it is still around, folks!)

  • **Special mention: ShareTV.org (ShareTV is dedicated to sharing television episodes and entire TV series. Find "24", "Heroes", and "Lost" episodes here. Special thanks to Chris R. for telling us about his web site.)

  • **Special mention: Torrent-Finder.com (This site has been submitted recently by three readers as their personal favorite torrent search engine. It "meta-searches" 159 torrent sites as of this writing. Special thanks to Dina, Suresh, and ChaOSthEory for this submission.)

Useful tips

Some useful tips to improving speed:

Make sure all your hardware (routers/NICs/computers) have up to date firmware/drivers and are set up properly to allow incoming/outgoing connections from your clients port.

check if your environment is clean (no conflicting software, bad drivers,virus/malware infected, registry errors…)

Check and see if your ISP doesn’t block or throttle file-sharing.

Try to sign up or get an invite from private torrent trackers, they have friendly communities and good torrents with lots of seeds, feedback, variety. I personally use Demonoid.com, a great community that you should keep an eye on since every once in a while they open sign ups for free.

Also check your firewall is not blocking the bit torrent clients port, this usually slows down speed dramatically.

Some must have software:

SG TCP/IP Optimizer - A great application to improve your download speed by optimizing your connection.

PeerGuardian 2 - It blocks undesirable P2P traffic, such as suspected federal agents (MPAA,RIAA), or, more importantly, spam intended to flood networks with fake content.

TIPS: A big mistake I see alot of noobs do is use Force Start, by right clicking a torrent that is queued and selecting Force Start, you will spread out your upload capacity over too many upload slots - and your overall download speed will actually suffer.

Torrents FAQ

What is a torrent?

Torrents are specialized files utilized in peer-to-peer (P2P) network environments. P2P is a network of personal computers that communicate with one another by running proprietary P2P software. The first P2P software designed to utilize torrents was BitTorrent by Bram Cohen. Other torrent clients have followed.

What is a .torrent file?

To start the download of a file, a user clicks on a link pointing to .torrent meta-data file. These meta-data files are not stored on the torrent trackers server, but are distributed among a number of .torrent file servers. In turn, each .torrent file points to a tracker, which keeps a global registry of all the downloaders and seeds of the corresponding file. The tracker responds to a user’s request with a list of some of the peers having (part of) the requested file, with whom the user can establish direct connections to barter for chunks of the file. One tracker can supervise the simultaneous downloads of multiple files.

What is a torrent tracker?

A Bit Torrent tracker centrally coordinates the P2P transfer of files among users. BitTorrent trackers are software server “toolkit” applications that typically run on Web sites.Tracker software serves up torrent files for download from a web site. The torrent tracker maintains information about all BitTorrent clients utilizing each torrent. Specifically, the tracker identifies the network location of each client either uploading or downloading the P2P file associated with a torrent. It also tracks which fragment(s) of that file each client possesses, to assist in efficient data sharing between clients.

What is a bit torrent client?

A BitTorrent client is any program which implements the BitTorrent protocol. Each client is capable of preparing, requesting, and transmitting any type of computer file over a network, using the protocol. A peer is any computer running an instance of a client.BitTorrent clients connect to a tracker when attempting to work with torrent files. The tracker notifies the client of the P2P file location (that is normally on a different, remote server).

How does it work?

What basically happens is a users browses a torrent tracker to find a torrent file of interest, download it, and open it with a BitTorrent client. The client connects to the tracker specified in the torrent file, from which it receives a list of peers currently transferring pieces of the file(s) specified in the torrent. The client connects to those peers to obtain the various pieces. Such a group of peers connected to each other to share a torrent is called a swarm. If the swarm contains only the initial seeder, the client connects directly to it and begins to request pieces. As peers enter the swarm, they begin to trade pieces with one another, instead of downloading directly from the seeder/

Okay…, So how do I start downloading?

After you have learned the basics of torrents above, you can start downloading all the files you want.Below I have compiled a list of my personal favorite bit torrent clients and bit torrent trackers, of course there are hundreds of torrent trackers and dozens of bit torrent clients but these will get you on your way.I have taken the liberty of writing a small tutorial for each client to get the Optimal settings, that will allow you to receive higher speeds and make your first torrent experience memorable.
